In the early 1900s, Anson Phelps Stokes, secretary, and George Parmly Day, treasurer, won Corporation approval for the preparation of a general architectural plan for Yale University. Mrs. Frances P. Garvan, a benefactor of Yale, secured and offered the services of architect John Russell Pope. Kingman Brewster was born in Longmeadow, Massachusetts on June 17, 1919. He received his undergraduate degree from Yale in 1941 and his law degree from Harvard in 1948. Brewster taught law at Harvard from 1949-1960. He served as provost of Yale from 1961-1963 and was president of Yale from 1963-1977. Brewster was U.S. ambassador to Great Britain from 1977-1981.
